The Science is Real


Red light therapy has real research behind it — and a lot of marketing that outruns that research. Here's what the studies found, what they didn't, and how to use light correctly once you understand the difference.

Mechanism

How light reaches a cell

Skin is more transparent to red and near-infrared light than you'd guess. That narrow band — roughly 650 to 1200 nm — passes through tissue better than any other part of the spectrum, because it sits between where blood absorbs light and where water does. Researchers call it the optical window.

Light enters tissue

Red wavelengths work at the surface, in skin and scalp. Near-infrared travels deeper, reaching muscle and connective tissue.

Mitochondria absorb it

An enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase part of your cell's energy machinery absorbs these specific wavelengths. It's the reason wavelength matters at all.

Cellular energy shifts

Absorption is associated with increased ATP production, nitric oxide release, and short-lived signaling molecules that influence how the cell behaves.

The cell responds

Downstream, studies have measured changes in collagen synthesis, local blood flow, and inflammatory markers. This takes repeated sessions, not one.

Different numbers. Different jobs.

Wavelength determines how deep light travels and which research applies. Fusion covers the full range, and each band can have a different job — so the useful question isn't how many you have, it's knowing which one you're using and why. Here's what each does.

660

Visible redSurface

Where it works: The top layer or so of skin, and the hair follicle. This is the shallow end of the therapeutic range.

What's been studied: Most skin-appearance and hair-density research uses red light in this band. It's the most-studied wavelength range for anything cosmetic.

Worth knowing: One controlled trial found red-only light performed as well as a broader mixed spectrum for skin measures — a useful check against the idea that more wavelengths always means more benefit.

Near-infrared
Deep

Where it works: Past the skin into muscle and joint tissue. Invisible to your eye — you'll feel gentle warmth rather than see it.

What's been studied: Measured penetration peaks near 808 nm, which is why this wavelength dominates deep-tissue and muscle-recovery research. Dose-finding trials in athletes have used it specifically.

Worth knowing: In one athlete trial, a mid-range dose beat both lower and higher doses. Turning it up did not help.

850

Near-infrared
Deep

Where it works: The most common near-infrared wavelength in consumer panels. Reaches muscle, fascia, and joints.

What's been studied: Frequently paired with 660 nm in combination protocols. Body fat is relatively transparent to near-infrared, which is part of why it travels further than red.

Worth knowing: Depth also depends on skin tone, blood flow, and how much light actually reaches you — which comes back to distance.

DeepNear-infrared

Where it works: The deep end of the optical window, just before water absorption starts limiting how far light can travel.

What's been studied: The published human research using LED delivery at this wavelength is thinner than for 660 or 850 nm. Most of what exists uses laser sources at close range.

Worth knowing: It appears on spec sheets as a premium headline feature. Treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to choose a panel.

Visible blue
Shallowest

Where it works: The shallowest wavelength in the therapeutic range. Blue is absorbed in the epidermis and upper dermis, reaching roughly a millimeter at most. It does not reach muscle, joints, or deep tissue, and no panel arrangement changes that.

What's been studied: Blue light is absorbed by porphyrins, compounds produced by bacteria that live on skin. That mechanism is why blue is studied for surface applications. The pooled clinical results, though, are thinner than the category's marketing suggests: a systematic review of 14 randomized trials covering 698 participants found most were small, ran under 12 weeks, and carried a high risk of bias, with no statistically significant difference in lesion counts versus comparators. Worth knowing: Devices that make treatment claims for skin conditions require FDA clearance under a specific classification. ONYX panels are general wellness products and hold no such clearance, so we make no treatment claims for blue light.

Before you use blue. Blue is the one wavelength here with a documented downside. Research shows visible blue light can generate oxidative stress in skin and induce pigmentation, and studies found the effect more pronounced and longer-lasting in deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). If you have deeper skin tone, or you're working on pigmentation or melasma, leave the blue and green channel off — it's separate from red and near-infrared, so your sessions lose nothing. Wear the supplied eye protection whenever blue is running.

Visible green
Surface

Where it works: Slightly deeper than blue, still well short of anything below the skin's surface layers.

What's been studied: The most-cited green light research isn't about skin at all. Work associated with Harvard's Rami Burstein found that narrow-band green near 520 nm produced smaller signals in the visual pathway than white, blue, red, or amber light, and follow-on randomized trials have tested it for headache. That research delivers light through the eyes, from a lamp, in a dim room, over sessions lasting an hour or more. It is a different exposure than standing in front of a panel, and a panel cannot reproduce it. Randomized controlled trial, Brain Sciences, 2025 · PMID 41300216

Worth knowing: Green is sometimes marketed for pigmentation and skin tone. The evidence doesn't support that at the strength those claims imply, and the outcomes usually attributed to green are better supported for red and near-infrared, which reach the tissue involved.

Six wavelengths, used on purpose

Most panels give you a number on a box. Fusion gives you the full range — 480 to 1060 nm — and tells you what each band is actually for. Red and near-infrared do the heavy lifting: the deepest research base, and the reach to get to the tissue the outcomes depend on. Blue and green work at the surface, with narrower and shallower profiles.

And you control them separately. The red and near-infrared bands run independently, and blue and green sit on their own channel — so you can run a red-and-near-infrared session with the visible colors off entirely, or use them on their own. A panel that fires everything at once gives you one recipe. Fusion lets you build the session around what you're actually after — which is the difference between owning 8 wavelengths and using them.

The research

What the studies found

Three of the areas below are supported by repeated randomized trials and meta-analyses — the same standard of evidence used to evaluate medications. Two are promising but thinner. One is early, and we've labeled it that way. Every study is linked so you can read it yourself.

Skin appearance and collagen

Well studied

Multiple randomized, controlled human trials with measured outcomes — not just before-and-after photos. This is the most consistently supported area.

Hair density

Well studied

Several double-blind, sham-controlled trials — the strongest study design available — with consistent direction of effect.

Localized joint and muscle discomfort

Well studied

Large meta-analyses support benefit at specific doses — with an important asterisk we've included rather than hidden.

  • A meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled knee trials found reduced pain and disability, and identified specific effective dose ranges — evidence that dose, not power, drives the result.

  • A meta-analysis published in The Lancet reported reduced neck pain immediately after treatment and for up to 22 weeks afterward in chronic cases. A later re-analysis argued the acute-pain finding weakens under a different statistical model — a genuine open question.

Muscle recovery and performance

Promising

Real trials in real athletes, but protocols vary so much between studies that pooled conclusions carry less confidence.

Skin healing and inflammatory markers

Promising

Supported in clinical settings, mostly using contact or close-range delivery rather than full-body panels at a distance.

Sleep, circadian rhythm, wellbeing

Early / unproven

You'll see confident claims about this across the industry. We don't think the evidence supports them yet, so we're saying so.

  • The research that exists in this area uses forehead-mounted transcranial devices in small clinical samples — not full-body panels used at a distance. Findings are mixed, and the most rigorous subsets have not shown consistent effects.

  • We make no claims about mood, mental health, or sleep for ONYX panels. If a company tells you their panel does these things, ask which study used their device, at their wavelength, at their distance.

What that means for you in practice

Translating the research into plain expectations, without promising you anything. The skin trials that measured collagen and wrinkle change ran 10 to 15 weeks of twice-weekly sessions before the differences showed up on instruments. The hair trials ran 16 to 24 weeks. Localized joint and muscle work tends to be felt sooner, but still across weeks of repeated sessions rather than after one.

So the honest expectation is a season, not a fortnight — and regular short sessions beat occasional long ones, because dose is what the research tracked and consistency is what produced the numbers. If you want something that changes how you look or feel by next week, this is the wrong purchase. If you'll use it three or four times a week for a few months, you're using it the way the studies did.

About this research. The studies referenced above investigated photobiomodulation as a general method. They were conducted independently, using a range of devices, wavelengths, doses, and delivery distances — most of them not ONYX products. They describe what researchers have observed about light therapy as a modality. They are not claims about what an ONYX panel will do for you, and individual results vary.

Straight answers

What the evidence doesn't show

We'd rather you buy a panel understanding exactly what it is. Here's what an honest reading of the literature requires us to tell you.

  • Most studies are small

    Many of the trials above enrolled 20 to 60 people. Enough to detect an effect, not enough to be certain about its size.

  • Protocols vary wildly

    Wavelength, dose, distance, and frequency differ so much between studies that reviewers routinely flag it as the field's central weakness.

  • Lasers aren't LED panels

    A lot of foundational research used medical lasers applied at close range. Effects may not transfer cleanly to a panel across the room.

  • Long-term data is thin

    Most trials run weeks to months. Very few follow participants for years.

  • Some claims have no support

    Fat loss, body contouring, and systemic whole-body wellness claims are not supported by reliable evidence. We don't make them.

  • Effects are cumulative

    Nothing here works in one session. The trials that found results ran weeks to months of regular use. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Dose & distance

Dose. Distance. Time.

This is the part almost nobody explains — and the part that decides whether a session does anything at all.

Two numbers matter. Irradiance is how much light lands on you right now, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter. Dose is the total that accumulates over the session, in joules per square centimeter. Dose is what the research reports.

Which means session length isn't a preference. It's arithmetic:

Seconds = Dose ÷ Irradiance

6 J/cm² at a measured 60 mW/cm² → 6 ÷ 0.06 = 100 seconds.

More is not better. Researchers describe a biphasic dose response: too little does nothing, a middle range produces the effect, and past that, benefit flattens or reverses. It's why the athlete trials found their lowest power setting and mid-range dose won. Doubling your session time is not doubling your result.

Distance changes everything. Light intensity falls off roughly with the square of distance. Step from 6 inches back to 12, and you're receiving about a quarter as much — meaning roughly four times the session length for the same dose. Any irradiance number without a stated distance is meaningless.

Why published numbers disagree. A solar power meter — the cheap tool most of the industry uses — reads roughly twice as high as a laboratory spectrometer, because it responds to a wider slice of the spectrum. When independent testers measured five of the most-marketed home panels with a calibrated spectrometer at a fixed 6 inches, every one came in well below its advertised figure. If a spec sheet doesn't name the instrument and the distance, treat the number as marketing.

Different wavelengths reach different depths.

Shorter wavelengths are absorbed near the surface. Longer ones pass through skin into muscle and connective tissue. That is why a panel with one wavelength can only do one job.
